HCC is the best! They are professional, efficient and hard workers that complete the job quickly and with attention to detail. Herb and his team clearly explain what they plan to do and follow through each project to the end. They have performed multiple jobs for myself and neighbors and have done an outstanding job each time. Highly recommended to anyone seeking concrete work or other home services in the San Diego area!

Herb and his crew are fantastic! We hired him for a concrete job that grew to include a new gate, a replacement of an old sewer line, and even a small electrical job. He and his guys are reliable and the quality of the work was great. His concrete crew are artists—there’s attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship. Herb is very focused on customer service and finding a way to make it happen. We already have him lined up for another project. He is friendly, responsive and has good ideas for solutions. We are so glad we were introduced to him because he can fix anything and has a sense of urgency about it. He’s our go-to guy now after almost 6 years of trying other contractors, he will always be my first call. I know I can count on him to answer!

Herb Construction is a family business that definitely takes pride in what they do. Herb himself not only shows up every day but is there the entire time working alongside his sons and nephews. I can't speak highly enough about the work that they've done and the follow through of every detail of the job. I highly recommend Herbs Construction.

How It Works

From First Call to Final Walkthrough

01

Initial Consultation and Site Visit

We meet at your property to walk through the project scope, take measurements, discuss your goals and budget, and identify any site-specific issues (access, utilities, structural concerns).

02

Design, Engineering, and Estimate

We develop plans (or work with your architect/designer if you already have plans), coordinate structural engineering if needed, and provide a detailed estimate that breaks out labor, materials, permits, and timeline.

03

Permitting and Pre-Construction

We pull all required permits, order materials with long lead times (cabinets, countertops, windows), and schedule the project start date.

04

Construction and Inspections

We execute the work in phases — demo, framing and structural, rough-in (plumbing, electrical, HVAC), insulation, drywall, finishes.

05

Final Walkthrough and Close-Out

After final inspection and city sign-off, we do a walkthrough with you to review the completed work, demonstrate any new systems or fixtures, and address any final details.

Frequently asked

Common questions, honest answers.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen or bathroom remodel in San Diego?

Yes, if you're doing any plumbing, electrical, or structural work. Moving a sink, adding a gas line, opening a wall, or relocating fixtures all require permits. Herbs Construction Co pulls those permits, submits plans to San Diego County Building & Safety, and coordinates inspections at rough-in and final. Permit review typically takes 2–3 weeks if plans are complete.

How long does a typical kitchen remodel take?

Most kitchen remodels take 4–8 weeks from permit approval to final inspection. That includes demo, any structural changes, rough-in for plumbing and electrical, drywall, cabinet install, countertop template and fabrication, tile backsplash, and flooring. Custom cabinets can add 4–6 weeks to the timeline, and permit review adds another 2–3 weeks at the start.

Can I build an ADU on my property in San Diego?

Most single-family lots in San Diego can have an ADU under California law (Government Code §65852.2). Detached ADUs can be up to 1,200 square feet, and setbacks are typically 4 feet from side and rear property lines. You'll need a building permit, and the city reviews for zoning compliance, structural engineering, and utility capacity. Permit review takes 4–8 weeks for most ADU projects. Herbs Construction Co handles the full process from design to final Certificate of Occupancy.

What's the difference between an ADU and a JADU?

A JADU (Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit) is smaller — up to 500 square feet — and must be within the existing home or attached garage. It shares utilities with the main house, which makes permitting faster and construction cheaper. A regular ADU can be detached, up to 1,200 square feet, and usually has separate utilities. JADUs are good for adding a small studio or in-law suite without a full ground-up build.

Do you handle permits and inspections?

Yes. Herbs Construction Co pulls all required permits, submits plans to the city, and schedules inspections at each phase — foundation, framing, rough-in (plumbing, electrical, mechanical), insulation, and final. Herb is on site when the inspector comes, addresses any corrections they note, and gets the final sign-off so you have a Certificate of Occupancy or signed-off permit.

How much does a bathroom remodel cost in San Diego?

It depends on size and finishes, but a typical full bathroom remodel (new tile, vanity, fixtures, plumbing and electrical rough-in) runs $20,000–$40,000. High-end finishes, larger spaces, or adding square footage will push that higher. We give a detailed estimate after the initial consultation so you know what you're paying for.
